I heard this discussed on NPR yesterday. It seems to me that NPR’s “expert” guest basically said that this was just an isolated incident. And that 99% of scientists still belive that global warming is real.

My only comment is that I’m pretty sure that our prisons are full of people that swore that their offenses were isolated incidents. So, I’m not so sure that the “isolated incident defense” holds all that much weight. IMHO these offenders and their supporters would be better served if they just admitted their blunders and took their lumps.

I think that the court of public opinion is the wrong place to glean information on this. I read a number of the emails on line and did not see a pattern of corruption to it although out of thousands of emails there are some that need explanation.

What is disheartening though is that this may be another nail in the coffin for data crunching science. I have complained many times about these purported medical studies that show linkage betweeen ingesting ‘A’ and medical condition ‘B’. These ‘studies’ are nothing more than data manipulations that allow a pre-conceived notion to be proven true some ‘x’ % of the time. The conclusions reached across a broad population does not tell us anything about treatment and we should not change our behaviors until there are more studies to prove the efficacy of the treatment itself.

I struggled with the argument that 42 scientists engaging in ‘peer reviews’ was somehow an inadequate review process for global warming. Peer review is a common practice in many scientific circles and not just climate.The quality of the Peer Review is only as good as the scientists who perform it though.

Interestingly enough, I have heard that no climate scientist has a published paper that rebuts the global warming hypothesis. This is odd to me because there are tons of YouTube videos over the past 3 years in which academics challenge the tenets of global warming . Is it possible that the papers were suppressed in some fashion?

In any case, after Cold Fusion went bust, after the attacks on the Theory of Evolution, after the attack on the DDT ban, and now this attack on global warming, I wonder if we are in the grip of a scientific charlatan shakeout or if this is an overall assault on science itself.

Do you trust science enough today to make public policy based upon its conclusions? That question may become more significant going forward.

I finally found a site that gives a coherent explanation of Climategate. It does not look good for the scientists involved in terms of data manipulation. However, many of the items are ‘talk’ and not action.

Great link PB. Let’s hope there will be investigations into the men behaving badly and not the hackers as Boxer wants. Her agenda driven existence is starting to be even more prevalent….
