The Irony Of The Union’s Decision

For a while now I’ve been trying to explain to some of our union friends that jobs are not the reason for going into business, it’s money. People start businesses to make money to provide for themselves and their investors. They are the people who lay it all on the line to create a product or provide a service to make money. The jobs created by these entrepreneurs is a benefit to the community where that business is located. Union members don’t normally get that. There is an entitlement attitude that leads these union members to believe that they are the sole purpose for a businesses being and that the business will not survive without them.

Companies like Mercury Marine sometimes have to make business decisions that effect all employees but thanks to union, the jobs of non-union folks rely on what the union decides. The union makes it’s members believe the employer will never be able to survive without them so when Merc gave the union a FINAL PROPOSAL the union told it’s members to vote it down assuring them that Merc will come back with another offer. We all know this didn’t happen. Mercury Marine made a business decision to move it’s Fond du Lac operations to Oklahoma where there is no union and also has a much better tax environment. This decision will definitely help Merc’s bottom line so they CAN MAKE MONEY!!!!!! Remember the making money thing?

The union members were duped by the union and now would like to have another vote.

Here’s the irony part.

The union has said it will not hold another vote unless there is significant changes to the offer. The UNION will not allow the members, whose jobs depend on the vote, to vote on the same offer.

Why?

It’s a business decision, that’s why. Believe it or not the unions are in business to make money and they are showing this. If the union caves on this vote, it might show weakness in other negotiations where more money is involved. It’s all about the money. The union has brushed aside the members of Fond du lac in favor of members elsewhere because the amount they would get from the local Merc employees is less than that where current negotiations are currently progressing.

It’s a business decision similar in nature to the decision Mercury Marine made but Merc has been made out to be the bad guy. Take a look at who actually pays the wages of these soon to be former employees and the who made the decision to vote down the contract. Look at their business decisions. Now ask yourselves this…. Who really is the bad guy here?
